However, concerning the latter, before any translations is made, a medical translator needs to know who the audience is.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Audience_and_Medical_Jargon\"><\/span><strong><b>Audience and Medical Jargon<\/b><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This specific criteria is as important as the detonant as to whether the text is translated into medical jargon or using more consumer friendly terms.<\/p>\n<p>It is more important than one could think, <a href=\"http:\/\/okomeds.com\/healthcare-and-medical-interpretation-services-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as studies carried out among patients<\/a> show that some of them\u00a0do not even understand\u00a0properly the most essential words, such as lesion or ulcer.<\/p>\n<p>And, even people who do grasp somehow the essential meaning of well known diseases, are not able to define them.<\/p>\n<p>The situation gets worse when English is not the patient\u2019s first language.<\/p>\n<p>To provide a solution two ways have been appointed. Some words might have different spelling or the same word may have\u00a0a different meaning (Surgery in British English can mean Doctor\u2019s Office, for example).<\/p>\n<p>But, of course, these are not all. A medical translator does not only work with medical jargon, but also with hospital jargon, which sometimes differs among practitioners. And any translation must take into account not only the source language, but also the culture.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Names_Metaphors_and_hospital_jargon\"><\/span><strong><b>Names, <\/b><\/strong><strong><b>Metaphors<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>\u00a0and hospital jargon<\/b><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This can be very important as regards drug name translation, as sometimes the brand name does not ring a bell in the target\u00a0language, or is not as well known. In this cases, using the international non-proprietary\u00a0name as well as the brand name, can make a big difference.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, <a href=\"http:\/\/okomeds.com\/medical-translation-step-by-step\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical translation<\/a> must deal with more metaphors\u00a0than one could <em><i>a priori<\/i><\/em>\u00a0think. The reasons are that we are in a field where euphemisms are very common, especially\u00a0in doctor-patient communication.<\/p>\n<p>They are very common in hospital slag, too. Why? Because words as social admission, for example, help hospital staff to deal with terrible human tragedies or unpleasant situations that are part of their job.\u00a0Using coded words helps the staff putting things in perspective, sometimes marking a needed distance, and gives them a feeling of belonging to the healthcare group.<\/p>\n<p>Eponyms are another challenge as they are synonyms\u00a0of other or several terms.
