Indeed, both the\u00a0choice of terminology and the register of the final\u00a0text should be driven by the end readers\u2019 characteristics: \u2018who are they and what do they know?\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Failing to take the readership into account when\u00a0making translation decisions can distort or obscure\u00a0a text\u2019s intended message and, thus, diminish the\u00a0quality of the translation.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Main_audiences_in_veterinary_translation\"><\/span>Main audiences in veterinary translation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The first audience in veterinary translation consists of veterinary surgeons.\u00a0These are professionals who have completed a\u00a0specialised degree encompassing a wide variety of\u00a0fields: from animal nutrition, parasitology, and\u00a0bovine reproduction to equine medicine, dermatology, animal behaviour, and anaesthesiology. The specialised knowledge they have\u00a0acquired is diverse, and so is the practice of the profession itself: veterinary surgeons may work in clinical practice, research organisations, academia, industry\u00a0or government.<\/p>\n<p>Pet owners are the second audience in veterinary translation.\u00a0This non-specialised, heterogeneous group includes anyone who owns a cat or a dog. A\u00a0wide variety of\u00a0documents target this group, from leaflets on diagnostic tests and websites on specific diseases to pet food booklets or information on emerging diseases. All these texts share a common challenge:\u00a0the terminology and register need to be carefully\u00a0written in layman\u2019s terms.<\/p>\n<p>Veterinary translation\u00a0requires much more than choosing the right\u00a0words in the target language.
