There are another two crucial areas that determine a translator\u2019s success or failure in the profession.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Writing_skills\"><\/span>Writing skills<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Serious professional translators think of themselves as writers and medical translators also think of themselves as doctors.\u00a0Translators need to be masters of their target language and have an exceptionally good writing style. This is why it\u2019s standard practice for translators only to translate from a foreign language into their native language \u2013 at least in the major language pairs. Most people can express themselves far better in their native language than they can in a foreign language, no matter how long they\u2019ve spent studying it.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Medicine_skills\"><\/span>Medicine skills<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The third aspect that is absolutely critical to success is having the appropriate subject-matter skills. Translators don\u2019t just translate words, they translate meanings, and in medicine this is a very important skill to have. If you don\u2019t understand the subject of a text, you won\u2019t be able to produce a convincing translation in the target language.
