The idea is to show the funny side of <a href=\"http:\/\/okomeds.com\/why-google-translate-is-not-your-friend-for-medical-translation\/\"><strong>Google Translate<\/strong><\/a> in medical communication. Do you think that medical translation is accurate enough with a Computer-Assisted Translation Tool as Google? Let&#8217;s see.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Method\"><\/span>Method<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Simple and effective. Just using some English sentences to be translated into other languages. Then, requesting native human translators to <a href=\"http:\/\/okomeds.com\/benefits-of-back-translation-in-the-drug-industry\/\"><strong>back translate<\/strong><\/a> the results into English. Such back translations were analysed for mistakes regarding the original sentences.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Results\"><\/span>Results<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Google works hard &#8211; we have no doubt about it &#8211; but <a href=\"http:\/\/okomeds.com\/with-a-medical-translator-you-get-what-you-pay-for\/\"><strong>results were a joke<\/strong><\/a>. Back translations were full of <a href=\"http:\/\/okomeds.com\/medical-translation-of-false-friends\/\"><strong>false friends<\/strong><\/a>, misleading, nonsenses&#8230; To be more precise, some parts of the original sentences were bad translated (e.g. <em>a cardiac arrest<\/em> turned into <em>an imprisoned heart<\/em>, <em>the donation of organs<\/em> into <em>the donation of tools<\/em>, <em>the need of a ventilation<\/em> into <em>a wind movement<\/em>, <em>a premature born child<\/em> become <em>a child sleeping early<\/em>, <em>did you have high fever at home? <\/em>was back translated as <em>your home temperature was high<\/em>, and so on&#8230;). Here you can find a bigger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/highwire\/markup\/824387\/expansion?width=1000&amp;height=500&amp;iframe=true&amp;postprocessors=highwire_figures%2Chighwire_math\"><strong>list of medical phrases<\/strong><\/a> that have been translated via Google Translate. This medical communication just offers an accuracy percentage of 58%. Does it mean that the remaining 42% of patients would donate tools or would have an imprisoned heart? Doctors and hospital staff may be a bit confused.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusions\"><\/span>Conclusions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you are a <a href=\"http:\/\/okomeds.com\/5-practical-tips-for-medical-translation\/\"><strong>medical translator<\/strong><\/a>, then you are sound and safe because your job has a foreseeable future. Google Translator might be useful for an emergency, but only avoiding polysemic words, double senses, and medium-long sentences which would make it crazy and confusing.
